NEW BEDFORD

New Bedford is an important port on the east coast of the United States, which began as a simple harbor and achieved worldwide fame, thanks to the whaling industry.
In the seventeenth century the whaling merchants of Nantucket became interested in the area and began to develop this industry. With the passage of time the relations between Nantucket and New Bedford allowed these two cities to dominate the whaling industry. From this moment, New Bedford began exporting products from whales, such as oil.

Later New Bedford replaced Nantucket and became the main whaling port in the country. This activity controlled the economy of the city as many families were dedicated to it. The population of the city also increased due to the arrival of many inmigrants attracted by the whaling job opportunities.

Ishmael, the protagonist, was one of those inmigrants who went to New Bedford attracted by the whale hunting. He formed part of the crew of the Pequod, a boat which hunted these animals.
